  • Leap of Faith?

This prayer was within the context of the ‘4-Hour Workweek : Chapter 3 Q&A’ post in my General Journal. 4 Hour Workweek is a book that teaches about how to ‘beat the game’ of earning income, and living a life with freedom of time and location.

Lord, is it unwise to take a ‘leap of faith’ by resigning my job to pursue my passions?

Michael, you are capable of far more than you know. Life has you, right now. I want you to have life.

What does that mean, that ‘life has me’?

It means that you’re stuck in a pattern. You’re stuck in a false perception of reality. I’m trying to help you see through it, to see past it.

It seems like too much risk, Lord. I don’t want my family to suffer because of some silly pursuit of fancy.

So pursuing your passions is silly? You already know that you will be most successful doing that which you are passionate about doing.

    I do know that.

And you know that I am guiding the way. You are on my path now Michael. You can trust in that.

How can I possibly ask [my wife] to trust in a decision like this. I fear she will see this as foolhardy.

She may, but with a proper plan, she will support you, because she loves you. And she believes in you Michael. You have provided for her in ways already that she never dreamed of. Plus, she knows that these material provisions are not what make her happy. She is more spiritually mature than you in this way, Michael. You think that she needs these things because of your pride in thinking that you are providing them for her (and your family for that matter). The truth is, you are not providing, I am. And they don’t ‘need’ what you think they need.

But won’t losing the provisions we are now accustomed to be harmful to us as a family?

First of all, who said you would lose anything? Second, even if you did ‘lose it all’, it’s not necessarily harmful to anything. It is all based on your attitude and how you respond to challenges. Do you pull together, or start pointing the finger? It’s not the situation, but the attitude toward it (the heart) that matters most.

You said before that I will be most successful in what I am passionate about. However, success also requires high degree of competence. Right now, I’m still a rookie at what I am passionate about. How can that develop success?

There are many avenues you could take with the passions you have. You may not be the best designer, you may not be the best coder, you may not be the best at analytics or marketing. But you understand them all, and are developing the ability to see how they all work together for maximum effectiveness. You are a leader, Michael. You are not a detail-guy. You have vision, you see solutions. You can lead others to create those solutions. You can help bridge the gap between your client’s problems and optimal solutions. That doesn’t mean you have to do the work yourself. You are now able to pull everything together. You have an incredible background that has prepared you for this. You are ready.

It’s not about the money, but that will come. It’s about doing what you are meant to do. Your passions provide hints to that. Everything is aligning. Keep going down the path you are on. I will not lead you astray.

I trust you Lord. I’m afraid, but I trust you.

What have I gotten myself into…
