Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding,
But a rod is for the back of him who is devoid of understanding.

In reading the (MacArthur Study Bible) commentary associated with this verse, it says that

This first reference to corporal punishment applied to the backside recommends it as the most effective way of dealing with children and fools.

After reading this, I was skeptical in its interpretation regarding children, as I didn’t understand how children was in view from the verse, and I remember a prayer in which you instructed me, I thought, to not resort to corporal punishment (spankings) and provided an alternative approach.
